How Do I Make Sure Sprouts Are Safe?

As sprouting becomes more and more popular because of its environmental benefits, lots of people still worry about its safety.

To ensure that your sprouts are safe, make sure to sanitize your sprouting jars before using them. During the process, rinse your sprouts at least twice a day with fresh, clean water (also use clean water when soaking your seeds). Also, remember to store your sprouts in a cool, dry location to avoid the growth of bacteria. Sprouting at home will lessen the chance of acquiring foodborne illness because you get to control the entire process.

Steps on How to Sprout

Here are some simple steps on how sprouting works:

Step 1First is you have to find an empty jar with a wide opening. It could be an empty sauce jar, oil jar, or any mason jar available in your house. Wash and sterilize the jar well before using.

Remember, you don’t need to buy a new jar. You can just recycle used ones in your house. It’s much more environmental that way too. 

Step 2Once you are done washing and sterilizing your jars, you now have to wash your seeds.

Step 3Time to soak your seeds! Place the seeds in your jar and cover it with water (the general principle is to use three parts water to one part seed). Make sure to stir it so that all seeds are wet. 

Keep in mind that the amount of seed use may vary depending on its size, the container’s size, and how many sprouts you want to produce.  

Step 4 Then cover the jar using either a sprouting lid, if you have one, or breathable cloth-like mesh or cheesecloth and secure it with a rubber band. Set it aside to soak.

As mentioned above, soaking hours for each seed are not the same. You wouldn’t want to mess your seeds up by soaking them for too long than the required hours.

Step 5Once the soaking time is up, you now have to drain the water through the sprouting lid or breathable cloth sieve. Rinse the seeds with clean, freshwater, swirl it a bit then drain it out. Repeat this process at least two times before totally draining all the water out.

Step 6Tilt the jar upside-down in a bowl to ensure proper drainage. It is important to see that the sprouts are being drained properly. Set it in a place where the sprouts will be able to breathe.

Step 7Now, all you have to do is to visit your sprouts for at least twice a day until it is ready to harvest. Rinse and drain it with fresh, cool water before placing it back in the bowl again.

Make sure to keep your seeds dry and clear to avoid the growth of any bacterial fungus that might destroy or hinder the growth of your sprouts

Step 8Time to harvest! For most seeds, you’ll be able to harvest the sprouts in just a couple of days. Rinse your sprouts and drain them thoroughly before eating them.

If you are not yet going to eat your harvested sprouts and would like to store them for future use, make sure to air dry them first for at least 30 to 60 minutes before storing them. Keep it refrigerated to last for 2-3 days.
