Is Soy Healthy?
Soy-based foods are known to be rich in protein, vitamins, minerals, fibers, and antioxidants that our bodies need.
It also contains soy isoflavones, the source behind several health benefits such as lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Soy-based diets also help improve heart health, reduce symptoms of menopause, and protect against the risk of getting certain cancers.
However, some people worry about the possible downsides of soy, like feminizing effects in men and a lasting impact on growth, digestion, and sexual maturation. It may also affect our thyroid function and increase breast cancer risk.
Though some of these concerns are supported by science, more research is still needed. Nevertheless, adding soy-based foods to our green lifestyle is not bad if we eat them with the right amount and in their least processed form.

Is Soy Bad for the Environment?
As soy foods remain in demand, soybean productions need to expand. And this expansion results in mass deforestation, increasing carbon emissions, soil erosion, and water contamination.
However, the need to increase soy production is not because of human consumption but because of the meat, dairy, and egg industries.
About 80 to 90% of soybeans are fed to farmed animals, while only 6% are turned into soy-based foods for human consumptions.
But this doesn’t mean we should stop eating soy-based foods. Adding soy products in our diet meal is still considered an eco-friendly substitute when consumed properly.

What Gives Soy Solution for Our Planet?
In terms of our protein intake, soy protein is way more sustainable and eco-friendlier than meat protein.
As discussed above, most soybeans are being fed to farmed animals. However, if we choose to directly consume soy, then the demand for soy as a feed crop would decline. Meaning, agricultural deforestation would decrease; more people will be fed while using less land.
