What Does Sustainable Transportation Mean?

Transportation systems are considered major polluters. In 2018, road vehicles were even accounted for 28% of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions. It was the largest contributor among other sources including electricity, industry, agriculture, commercial, and residential. With this, the call for sustainability has targeted this sector. This brings us to sustainable transportation, also known as green transportation. Sustainable transportation is an alternative means for mobility that has a lesser environmental impact. These alternative modes of transportation aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, and regulate the use of the world’s resources.

Why Do We Need Sustainable Transport?

There are two major needs that sustainable transportation is geared towards addressing: lowering greenhouse gas emissions and regulating the use of non-renewable resources.

Vehicles used for land transport, cars specifically, emit nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and other hydrocarbons in the air. Not only does this contribute to climate change, but poor air quality poses risk for various respiratory illnesses as well.

Aside from this, most vehicles use gasoline and diesel to fuel their engines. Gasoline and diesel are produced from fossil fuel, a non-renewable energy source. Simply said, this resource will run out at some point. If its use is not regulated as early as now, future generations may not have access to these resources someday.

For the sake of avoiding the exacerbation of climate change, achieving cleaner air to breathe, and conserving non-renewable resources, any greener alternative is considered the best way to go. Sustainable modes of transport are one of those game-changers in this journey towards sustainable living.

How Can Transport Be Sustainable?

Mobility is a key ingredient in the development of civilizations. While walking from point A to B is the most basic way to travel sustainably, taking away convenient modes of transport will surely cripple society. If you think that sustainable transportation is limited to walking alone, then you are completely wrong. There are various modes of green transportation. Any means of mobility that does not use fossil fuel, or reduces its use, is considered sustainable.

Here are some green means of transport:

  • Walking
  • Cycling
  • Using green vehicles (uses alternative fuels other than diesel and gasoline)

Similarly, here are some alternatives that aim to decongest roads as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions:

  • Commuting using public transport systems
  • Carpooling

Is It Worth Getting an Electric Bike?

One of the green alternative means of transport identified above is cycling. A lot of people consider this one of the best alternatives because it hits two birds with one stone—fitness and environmentalism.

Electric bikes are similar to traditional bikes, save for the fact that they are equipped with extra components. These extra components include an electric motor, a battery, and sometimes a display screen. Most electric bikes differ in the extra components that they offer. The extra components within these bikes make the ride easier by adding boost and power.  This ride assistance still allows for a significant amount of exercise, but without the high impact struggle.

Are These Electric Bikes Worth It Though?

By evaluating the pros and cons, we certainly can consider electric bikes worth it. The number one reason being that cycling is very safe for the environment. The initial investment may be costly because they are a little pricier than traditional bicycles. Looking forward, however, the initial cost is minute compared to the potential savings made due to the purchase. Moreover, choosing to travel by bicycle is a gateway to developing good habits. Waking up early, doing some cardio, and developing a more mindful awareness of your surroundings are some.

Realistically, there are a few obstacles for electric bike users. First is the limited mobility. Long-distance travel is obviously a challenge. This is aggravated by unpredictable weather changes as well. Second, charging stations are not as accessible as gasoline stations for cars are. Recharging electric bikes might pose an additional concern.

Still, given these challenges, it is worth owning an electric bike.

How to Improve Sustainable Transportation?

It is important to encourage the purchase and use of sustainable alternatives for transportation. This can be done so by providing charging stations for electric vehicles accessible throughout town. Employers must also encourage and award employees who carpool to work. For example, this can be done by providing free reserved parking slots for carpool vehicles.

The first step to improving sustainable transportation is by providing facilities and programs that make the practice a rewarding experience. For people to appreciate this green practice, they must first feel the benefit of doing so.

What Is The Most Sustainable Form of Transport?

Putting external factors aside, the most sustainable form of transport would still be walking. It has zero environmental impact and zero cost as well. Moreover, it is a healthy practice to walk a certain distance every day.

Walking to and from work and school every day sounds virtually impossible, however. It’s good that the market today offers a plethora of options to practice sustainability in transportation. Choose what works for you best, stick to it, and go a step further by encouraging others to do the same!
